Thomas Jefferson starb am 4. Juli 1826, wenige Stunden vor seinem Freund John Adams, der fünfzig Jahre zuvor mit ihm die Declaration of Independence unterzeichnet hatte. Auf seinem Grabstein wollte er nicht als ehemaliger Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika bezeichnet werden, sondern als der Autor der Unabhängigkeitserklärung und des Statuts von Virginia, das Religionsfreiheit garantierte.
